Biography
Halkenburg is introduced as the Ninth Prince, officially the son of Duazul but biologically born to Unma before being adopted. A brilliant student at Miwal University, physicist, world-class archer and public critic of the monarchy, he initially refuses to participate in a fratricidal war.
Before the trip, Kurapika mistakenly believes he is responding to an ad from Halkenburg, whose popularity would have attracted assassins. On board, the prince reaffirms to Nasubi that he does not want the throne at the price of blood, but his father replies that he is free to act as he wishes.
After Momoze's death, Halkenburg gathered his supporters for a minute of silence. Their shared will unleashes an immense wave of aura and his Guardian Beast marks their hands with a pinion, increasing their collective aura to a level that terrifies Shikaku.
Halkenburg tried for several days to deliver a petition to Nasubi. On the sixth day, he finally forced the passage with his men, demanded an end to the succession and shot the king. The Beast of Nasubi stops the bullet; when he turns the weapon on himself, his own Guardian Beast also prevents his suicide.
Nasubi explains to him that the survival of the country takes precedence over that of the princes and that he will have to become king before he can abolish the monarchy. Halkenburg then fully accepts the fight and awakens Grimmel the Dissonance, an ability powered by the will and aura of his marked followers.
Facing Shikaku, he materializes an arc of aura and shoots an arrow that passes through Culdcept and all defenses. The attack randomly transfers Sumidori's soul into Shikaku's body. Halkenburg then experiments to understand the relationship between the two consciousnesses and uses the possessed body to simulate Shikaku's suicide.
On the tenth day, Vict tries to attack him but a new arrow hits him. Benjamin and Balsamilco understand that the weapon is impossible to block or dodge and that any sufficiently loyal follower can fuel the collective aura, even if they are not part of their guard.
Balsamilco prepares TSK-17 to assassinate Halkenburg at the hospital. Halkenburg anticipates the operation and hits him with his arrow through a wall, this time transferring his own soul into Balsamilco's body. His original body, infected, is taken to the hospital while he poses as his killer.
Halkenburg deduces that if his body dies first, Balsamilco's soul will take priority again in his own body. He therefore plans to swallow a sleeping pill just before his original shell dies, in order to have about ten hours to make his next move.
His body died on the morning of the twelfth day. From Balsamilco's body, Halkenburg obtained permission from Benjamin to organize a solemn funeral procession, accompanied by his supporters and announced to the entire ship. His corpse is transferred from Tier 3 to the Tier 1 morgue, while his soul secretly continues the war of succession.
After the proclamation of martial law, Benjamin comes to suspect that Balsamilco is controlled and that the collective power of Halkenburg may override the ordinary rules of priority of Manipulation. The current situation therefore distinguishes a deceased royal body from a still living consciousness.
ABILITIES & POWERS
Halkenburg has exceptional academic intelligence: admitted at the age of fifteen to the most prestigious university in the world, he is notably an expert in physics. A silver medalist at the World Archery Championships, he is one of the best known archers. His charisma brings together many supporters and his strategic mastery is evident in his petitions, his experiments on soul transfer and his infiltration of Benjamin's camp.
Weapon used during his confrontation with Nasubi, then turned against himself. Both shots are stopped by the Guardian Beasts.
AURA PROFILE
Nen & abilities
Halkenburg develops his own power after agreeing to fight in the succession. Balsamilco believes that his Guardian Beast granted him this. His aura combines with that of marked people sharing his will.
The collective aura forms an armor deemed invincible and an arrow impossible to block or dodge. Activation appears to require Halkenburg to be willing to risk his life with every shot.
