On the tenth day Vict moves against Halkenburg and a new arrow hits him; Benjamin and Balsamilco hear the defeat and conclude the weapon is impossible to block or dodge and that any sufficiently loyal follower can feed it, guard or not. Benjamin confirms through Benjamin Baton that Vict still lives — which establishes the body, not the occupant. Under Grimmel's rule a marked soul now holds that body while its own sleeps, and the chapters have not yet said whose.

Written in the style of Neon Nostrade's poems. Lovely Ghostwriter had already vanished from Skill Hunter when the Black Whale sailed: this sheet is a reconstruction, not a record.

      The Black Whale sounds its horn and leaves the port of Kakin for the New Continent, at noon on a Sunday. The blast is what opens the Succession Contest: the rules read out at the urn ceremony hold that the contest begins with it, and that a potential heir dying before it would call the whole thing off.
